What this notice means

ASMT-10 is the first and best opportunity to resolve a discrepancy before it becomes a show cause notice with interest and penalty. A reconciled, documented reply often closes the matter at this stage.

Common reasons it is issued

  • Mismatch between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B
  • ITC in GSTR-3B higher than GSTR-2A / 2B
  • Turnover mismatch with e-way bills or income tax returns
  • Reverse charge liability not discharged
  • Ineligible ITC or late-claimed ITC

Time limit to respond

Within 30 days from the date of service of the notice, or such further period as the officer allows (Rule 99(1)). The reply is filed on the GST portal in ASMT-11.

Documents to keep ready

  • ASMT-10 notice
  • GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9 and 2A/2B for the period
  • Books of account, sales and purchase registers
  • Supplier reconciliation and credit notes

How we handle it

  1. Reconcile each discrepancy with returns and books
  2. Separate genuine liability from data or timing differences
  3. Draft the ASMT-11 reply with annexures; pay through DRC-03 where liability is accepted
  4. Follow up for ASMT-12 or respond to further proceedings

Points to note

  • Partial payment through DRC-03 with interest can limit further exposure
  • An unexplained discrepancy can lead to a show cause notice u/s 73 / 74 / 74A
